Structures of Chinese Characters: the Compound Characters (Part Three)

In this lesson, we will give some examples to help you understand the compound characters of enclosed structure. Please note that in some of the characters, not all strokes are shown one by one, because these have been shown in our former lessons.

3. Enclosed Structure (包围结构 )

On the basis of the direction of the enclosed sides, it can be subdivided into the following sub-strcutures:

1). Enclosed on two sides. This can be subdivided into the three followings:

a). Enclosed from upper and left sides, like the picture shows:

For example: "历" and "应".

历 (lì, go through)

应 (yīng, should)

b). Enclosed from upper and right sides, like the picture shows:

For example: "可".

可 (kě, can)

c). Enclosed from lower and left sides, like the picture shows:

For example: "达" and "起".

达 (dá, reach)

起 (qǐ, rise)
