Grammar Focus

把 (bǎ) construction — object manipulation

把 moves the object before the verb to emphasise what is done to it: 把书放在桌子上 (Put the book on the table). Required when describing disposal, placement, or transformation of an object.

Passive construction with 被 (bèi)

被 marks a passive action, especially an undesirable one: 我的手机被偷了 (My phone was stolen). Less common than English passive — Chinese prefers active constructions in most cases.

Potential complements: V得/不 + result

Insert 得 (can) or 不 (cannot) between a verb and its result complement: 看得懂 (can understand by reading) / 看不懂 (can't understand). Critical for expressing capability.

Complex clauses with 如果…就 and 只要…就

如果…就 (if…then) and 只要…就 (as long as…then) build conditional sentences. The subject can appear before 如果 or after it, but 就 always precedes the main verb in the result clause.

Study Tips for HSK 3

1

HSK 3 introduces the writing component for the first time. Practice writing 50-word responses on familiar topics (my hobby, my job, a trip I took) — accuracy matters more than sophistication at this stage.

2

The 把 structure is tested heavily from HSK 3 upward. Build a bank of 15-20 pattern sentences using 把 and practise until the word order feels natural, not forced.

3

Don't skip the abstract nouns (文化, 环境, 发展). These appear in reading passages throughout HSK 3-9, and recognising them quickly prevents comprehension bottlenecks on timed tests.
