Grammar Focus

Classical Chinese embedded in modern texts

Advanced Chinese texts regularly embed classical structures: 之乎者也, 何以…, 无以…. At HSK 7+, passive recognition of classical forms appearing in literary and philosophical texts is expected — not full classical literacy.

Specialised domain registers

Legal Chinese uses 依据, 当事人, 违约; medical Chinese uses 症状, 诊断, 预后; academic Chinese uses 研究表明, 本文探讨, 综上所述. At HSK 7, learners are expected to navigate at least 2-3 specialised domains.

Pragmatic implication and face management

Advanced Chinese communication relies heavily on indirect speech acts. Understanding what is implied rather than stated — through softening (稍微, 有一点), indirection (不太方便), and formulaic politeness — is an HSK 7 skill.

Multi-clause argumentative discourse

HSK 7 writing and speaking tasks require sustained, multi-paragraph reasoning: laying a premise, qualifying it, anticipating objection, rebutting, and drawing conclusion — all within appropriate Chinese discourse conventions.

Study Tips for HSK 7

1

The speaking component is new at HSK 7. Practise speaking for 2-3 minutes on abstract topics (education policy, technological change, social inequality) without notes. Record yourself and review for hesitation patterns and register slippage.

2

Read one academic paper abstract or legal document per week in Chinese. The vocabulary and sentence structures in these texts are concentrated sources of HSK 7 language — and they force active processing rather than passive recognition.

3

Build a specialised vocabulary bank in at least one professional domain that matters to you (law, medicine, business, technology). Depth in one domain transfers breadth recognition in others, since academic registers share morphological patterns.
