Usage Notes

Indirect disagreement is the norm

In Chinese social contexts, blunt disagreement can cause loss of face (面子 miànzi). It is more common to soften disagreement with phrases like 我理解你的想法,但是… (I understand your thinking, but…) before offering a counter-view. Direct confrontation is generally avoided.

可能 — the hedge word

可能 (kěnéng, maybe/possibly) is one of the most useful hedging words in Mandarin. Adding 可能 or 也许 before a statement softens your certainty without being dismissive. This is considered polite rather than evasive.

说不定 — a very Chinese way to hedge

说不定 literally means 'can't say for certain' and is used similarly to 'who knows' or 'it's hard to tell'. It's neutral and non-committal — perfect when you genuinely don't know or don't want to state a firm position.
