Usage Notes

麻烦你了 — the key politeness word

麻烦 (máfan) means 'trouble' or 'bother'. Saying 麻烦你了 when asking for help acknowledges that you are inconveniencing the other person and shows respect. It is very commonly used and expected in polite requests. Leaving it out can sound blunt.

不用客气 — the invitation to be open

不用客气 means 'no need to be polite' and is used to put someone at ease. When someone offers help and adds 有事尽管说 (just say if you need anything), they are genuinely inviting you to ask without hesitation. Take them at their word — it is sincere.

Declining help gracefully

When declining help, Chinese speakers typically add a thank-you phrase even while saying no. 不用了,谢谢 or 我自己来就行 are both polite ways to decline without seeming rude or ungrateful. Always acknowledge the offer before declining.
